Earlier this year, IDOE submitted a state Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan amendment to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to allow Indiana’s criteria for students to exit EL status to be applied to 2024 WIDA ACCESS results. This request is awaiting formal approval, however, ED has permitted IDOE to begin providing technical assistance to schools to implement the change detailed here: Proposed Changes: Indiana’s EL Exit Criteria for 2023-2024 School Year. In this initial year of implementation, any exit criteria decisions made for eligible students using a portfolio of evidence will occur at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. Upon formal ED approval, IDOE will release a memo and accompanying guidance prior to the upcoming school year. Please contact IDOE’s Office of English Learning and Migrant Education with questions.
